Motivation and Religion According to Dr. David Elkins, Contemplation, meditation, prayer, rituals and other spiritual practices have the power to release the life force in the deepest levels of the human psyche, levels that secular interventions cannot reach (Elkins 1999). Spirituality may not just about one person healing. It may be about the look of wonder on a childs face or the love we feel for a family member. It could also be about finding the place that attaches one person to another. Its about seeing the sacred in our lives and opening the door to a life of passion and depth or even strength and power. A major role in embracing a religion or spirituality has to do with internal motivation. Anger, fear, and/or hurt could motivate someone to seek out those unlike and uncomfortable feelings and find happi ness, love, and security in religion. Someone could easily find a belief that gives him/her hope. People in general define their god, not as a person, but as a force, a principle, . . .an integrating power that expresses the unity and the meaningfulness of a higher-being (Maslow 1976). Some recognition needs to be given to factors which are basic to an understanding of any religious experience. [Religious] attitudes in general are born of conditioning circumstances which have been more or less persistently present in the formation of the psycho-physical personality. Man gets his attitudes from longstanding associations with parents, social groups, intellectual constants; in short, with those environmental influences of longstanding (Olt 1956). Introduction If you were like me, when someone mentioned classical music or music for the heroic era you knew very little to nothing about the subject. The only thing you knew was that it was music from a long time ago and that Beethoven was the only artist you could name. So, let me enlighten you on what classical music is and the era it comes from. The term classical is something that has a wide and long-lasting appeal. In music, when a piece was written from between about 1750 to 1825 it was considered classical or from the Baroque era. The two most important things in music from this period were order and balance. On this occasion there was a fair amount of people in attendance. Attire In all three performances, the band consisted of professional musicians who definitely played and sounded like professionals. Their attire of the musician in each piece could be described as formal. In the first video of Beethoven Overture to Egmont, they seemed to be a little classier when it comes to their attire. The men wore very nice tuxedos and the women had on black dresses. In the second piece, the Creatures of the Prometheus their dress attire was not as formal. The observation was made due to some of the women wearing black dress shirts and dark jeans and the men wearing suits with no bowtie or tie and no white shirts. In the last video Ludwig van Beethoven’s 9th their attire was formal. They matched the attire of the first performance. The men had on nice tuxedos and the women had on elegant black dresses. Egmont Overture The era that the Beethoven Overture to Egmont piece originates is from the heroic period. The heroic period is considered to be the middle period, as it was the bridge from the classical era to romanticism. My review of this concert is positive and I would recommend that anyone watch it. â€Å"Full Moon Friday the Thirteenth† is a story about superstition and whether people should believe it. Throughout the story, Gawande transitions from a very sarcastic tone to a much more serious tone towards the end. This was due to a series of unfortunate events that he never would have expected, coincidentally occurring on none other than Friday the Thirteenth. At first, he attempted to shut down the superstitions and ignored them as if they weren’t a threat. Instead, he succumbed to them and realized that he was perhaps in for a very busy night at the hospital. Throughout the story, Gawande offers different opinions. At some points, he tells us why it is crazy to believe such a weird superstition, such as a particular day of the†¦show more content†¦So, at one point or another, Gawande argues on both sides of the spectrum, explaining that either view is a possibility. However, for Gawande, his tone transitions from sarcastic and not really believing it himself to a much more serious tone. This change, occurring towards the end of the story, perhaps completely flip-flopped his opinion on it. Even though this story is about a serious subject, Gawande still manages to throw some of his own humor into the mix. This is a good point made by him. As this was mentioned earlier, bad things can happen to anyone, anytime, and anyplace. To several people, including myself, this is just a superstition; nothing more and nothing less. Sure, there are always different opinions, but that’s all they are: OPINIONS. Gawande explains this very well in just one statement. He says that we could have feared any other day of the year. We could have feared Thursday the thirteenth, or Friday the fifth, instead of Friday the thirteenth (16). It is in fact true that we could have referred to any day as unlucky. It’s just like having a lucky number too. To you, it may truly be lucky and make you feel that way too. On the other hand, your â€Å"lucky number† may not be someone else’s lucky number.
